Highest quality of naturally extra virgin olive oil from Palestine. The
olive oil is naturally organic owing to ancient Canaanite traditions
of farming and harvesting which persist in Palestinian communities to this
day. Oil from genetically modified olives or chemically enhanced
fertilized olives is not accepted and farmers and producers who use stone
ground presses, are paid a higher price for this age-old tradition. No
machine harvested olives are accepted for the oil. The sale of this
oil supports the Palestine farmers, provides equitable employment and
investment in the community and also ensures sustainable environmental
practices in the maintenance, harvest and production of the olive oil.
In addition, the oil is bottled, packaged and labeled in Palestine -
bottles, boxes, labels are all acquired locally in Palestine, which assists
the growth and support of the local economy.
Please note that we no longer carry fair trade
items. We are greatly sorry for the inconvenience. A reference page
containing links to all your favorite fair trade products will be
available soon.

oil is unrefined, unfiltered and was pressed and bottled at

- Palestine Fair Trade Association (PFTA),
Palestine PFTA, is a non-governmental organization based in Jenin
which works on raising awareness of fair
trade principles among Palestinian producing communities, monitors fair
trade practices and guidelines among its members and certifies fair trade
products or seeks international certification for its members and producers.
PFTA has established a strict criteria of fair trade and environmental
guidelines for the production of the olive oil as well as for the importers
who import oil from Palestine. The guidelines include paying fair
wages, transparency, workers rights, prepayment, farming methods,
environmental protection, consumer education etc. PFTA
works in conjunction with Canaan Fair Trade to produce, package and distribute the oil.
Fair prices are paid to farmers and producers even when markets are low which allows
the producers to cover the cost of harvest, tree maintenance and providing
food, shelter, education and medical care for their families. The fair price
paid to farmers is about 40% above the current free market price in
Palestine and farm workers are paid one-third of the
crop in good seasons and one-half of the crop in bad seasons. 30% of
Canaan's profits are invested into the producing communities in
the form of material support for farmers (i.e. new trees and better
harvesting equipment), education on fair trade practices, and ecological
research into their environmental challenges such as natural pest control
and introduction of GMO olive trees in the Negev Desert which can harm the
organic crops in the hills of Palestine. Canaan uses recycled
materials in their bottling and packaging process and obtains all materials
from Palestinian communities.
