Frutos de los Andes is tropical fruit grown, hand-cut and naturally dried in
Bogota Colombia. The fruit comes from small scale farmers who
are paid fair wages for their fruit. Small scale farmers for the most
part use sustainable farming practices and do not have the money to pay for
fertilizers or pesticides. Organic certification is expensive as is
fair trade certification for individual farmers, though Level Ground Trading
(importer) is working on both. In an effort to help diversify the economy of
farming communities Level Ground Trading proposed and funded the startup of
a fruit drying company in Colombia, Fruandes Ltd., which purchases
fruit at a fair price from the small scale farmers and employs marginalized
women from the township of Cazuca to hand-cut, dry and package Frutos for
export. These women benefit with fair wages, healthcare benefits for their
family and school scholarships for their children.
The fruit is
packaged in 100g (3.5 oz) and 250g (8.8 oz) polythene zip lock bags. The fruit is dried
without any added
sugar, preservatives, sulfur dioxide - just fresh fruit - a 30g (1oz) of
dried Mango equals one fresh Mango. The only fairly traded and great
tasting dried fruit available!.
Please note that we no longer carry fair trade
items. We are greatly sorry for the inconvenience. A reference page
containing links to all your favorite fair trade products will be
available soon.

- Fruandes Ltda, Colombia
Frutos de los Andes is a product of Fruandes Ltda in Bogota
Colombia. In 2000 Level Ground Trading invested in a commercial dehydrator
and in the education of a Colombian agronomist in the techniques of fruit
drying and food processing & packaging. The company Fruandes was set up
shortly thereafter with the intent of supporting small scale fruit farmers
and employing marginalized women who are sole providers for their families.
The employees of Fruandes are paid a fair wage, provided skill-building
opportunities, healthcare benefits and school tuition for their children.
