We NOW have utensils made from two different biodegradable
resin formulations:
-
Made from 80% non-GMO corn starch and 20% other biodegradable
fillers and can handle hot foods and liquids up to about 190-200
degrees F.
-
Made from 100% non-GMO corn starch, but only good for
cold and warm foods up to 120 degrees F
These biodegradable utensils have been recently redesigned
are now also packaged
in biodegradable packaging made from corn starch , which is compostable as well. Please compost the
packaging together with the utensils.
Heat Resistant Utensils (190-200F)
These biodegradable utensils used to be made from potato starch
or a
mixture of corn and potato starch resin. The potato
content has been replaced completely by non-GMO corn resin.
The resin shows over 60% biodegradation
within 90 days under the ISO 14851 testing methods which
measure biodegradability. The resin at 0.25mm thickness has
passed the European EN13432 standards for biodegradation, completely
breaking down in 10 weeks . However, the utensils are
approximately 3.5mm thick, and hence will take much longer to
biodegrade. Composting is required
for biodegradation and based on the above test results we estimate that these
compostable utensils may take approximately 1 year to break
down in a commercial composting facility and about 2 years in a home
composting system. This is not an ideal situation, as most
commercial composting systems have a 60-90 day active composting process and
the utensils will need to be screened and put back into the next compost
cycle.
Compostable Non-Heat Resistant Utensils (120 degrees F)
These compostable utensils are made from 100% non-GMO corn
starch PLA resin and will completely compost in a commercial composting
facility within 90-180 days. Home composting is not
advised for this compostable cutlery, as they do require a higher heat to
break down, which may not occur in most home composting systems.
Please note, that there is a difference between
compostability and biodegradability as noted on our main bioplastics page.
Compostability in addition to biodegradation mandates no eco toxicity
and more than 90% disintegration into pieces less than 2mm within
180 days, according to the ASTM definition of compostability.
